Apocalypse Soon: Iran and the 12th Imam

Most Iranians are Shiite Muslims; President Ahmadinejad and his cabinet are devout Shiites. As such they believe in and await the 12th Imam (Religious Leader) who was appointed by Allah but has been hiding in caves since the 13th century. Their belief is that he will return just before judgment day, when certain conditions have been fulfilled. Ahmadinejad fervently believes that Israel must be destroyed and the "Great Satan" (us and the rest of the West) must be subjugated or destroyed. Keep in mind that this is not simply the ravings of a power-mad tyrant, this is the religious statement of a fervent believer who has the power to make his beliefs come true.

The 12th Imam or the "Mahdi" will appear after 3 years of chaos, terror and oppression. He will then rule the Muslim world for 7 years and bring peace and tranquility and unicorns that fart rainbows, something like Obama promised in 2008. Further details can be found here. The point is: Iran has or will soon have operational nuclear weapons and delivery vehicles for them (missiles). They've announced that they're going to do something really significant on 02/11/10, the anniversary of the 1979 revolution when they threw out the Shah. They have no disincentive to use nuclear weapons. If they start the apocalypse, they have achieved their religious goals. - Incinerate most of the earth, the Mahdi crawls out of his cave, and they all live happily ever after.
